Picnic at Shelter Point, Texada Island

(from Headline Magazine Fall 2010)

After a week of record-breaking heat for Coastal BC, a breezy ferry ride and a picnic at Shelter Point, Texada Island, provided a perfect antidote. Shelter Point provides tables, fire pits, and campsites (for those staying more than a couple of hours). Our site was a shady oasis for a picnic wiener roast.

Walking on the red hot sunny beach searching for flower rock was easily relieved by a shaded chair in the cool sea breeze. Flower rock, a formation particular to Texada Island, has light gray five-pointed crystal “flowers” embedded in dark igneous rock. We enjoyed hours of wading and searching for this geologic wonder.

Our greatest delight, however, was renewing and building new friendships amongst the waves and over the fire pit  while we roasted wieners and toasted marshmallows. On the ferry ride back to Powell River, we made a unanimous decision to make this picnic an annual event.
